The Treasure Coast is a stretch of coastline on Florida’s Atlantic Coast that includes Indian River, Martin, and St. Lucie counties. The name comes from the Spanish Treasure Fleet that was lost in a hurricane in the early 1700s. The Vero Beach Press Journal newspaper coined the term “Treasure Coast” after salvagers began recovering Spanish treasure off the coast in 1961.
